1. How many districts does Hanoi have?
Currently, Hanoi has 30 administrative units at the district level, which include 17 rural districts, 12 urban districts, 1 town and 579 administrative units at the commune level, consisting of 383 communes, 175 wards and 21 townships.
The city of Hanoi comprises 12 urban districts, including: Ba Dinh, Cau Giay, Dong Da, Hai Ba Trung, Hoan Kiem, Thanh Xuan, Hoang Mai, Long Bien, Ha Dong, Tay Ho, Nam Tu Liem and Bac Tu Liem. The 17 rural districts include: Thanh Tri, Ba Vi, Dan Phuong, Gia Lam, Dong Anh, Thuong Tin, Thanh Oai, Chuong My, Hoai Duc, My Duc, Phuc Tho, Thach That, Quoc Oai, Phu Xuyen, Ung Hoa, Me Linh and Soc Son, along with the town of Son Tay.
Hanoi is the city with the most administrative units at the district level in Vietnam and it is also the only centrally-controlled city in the country with a town.
Hanoi serves as the capital of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam and is recognized as one of the two special-class urban areas in the country. It is the largest city in Vietnam by area and is considered a key political, economic, cultural and educational center.
Geographically, Hanoi is located in the northwest of the Red River Delta, stretching from 20°34′ to 21°18′ North latitude and from 105°17′ to 106°02′ East longitude. The administrative boundaries of Hanoi on the map are as follows:
- To the north, it borders the provinces of Thai Nguyen and Vinh Phuc.
- To the south, it borders the provinces of Ha Nam and Hoa Binh.
- To the east, it borders the provinces of Bac Giang, Bac Ninh and Hung Yen.
- To the west, it borders the provinces of Hoa Binh and Phu Tho.
With an area of 3,359.82 square kilometers, Hanoi is the largest centrally-controlled city in Vietnam. Additionally, it is known as the second most populous city, with a total population of 8.4 million (as of 2022).
2. List of current districts in Hanoi
On May 29, 2008, the National Assembly of Vietnam officially passed Resolution No. 15/2008/QH12 regarding the adjustment of the administrative boundaries of Hanoi and surrounding provinces, effective from August 1, 2008. According to this resolution, the entire province of Ha Tay, Me Linh district of Vinh Phuc province and four communes belonging to Luong Son district of Hoa Binh province were merged into Hanoi city. As a result, the area of the city expanded from nearly 1,000 square kilometers to 3,324.92 square kilometers and the population increased from 3.4 million to 6.23 million.
On May 8, 2009, further adjustments were made to the administrative boundaries of Hanoi as follows:
- Dong Xuan commune of Luong Son district, Hoa Binh province, was transferred to Quoc Oai district, Hanoi.
- Three communes: Tien Xuan, Yen Binh and Yen Trung, from Luong Son district, Hoa Binh province, were transferred to Thach That district, Hanoi.
- Ha Dong district was established from the former Ha Dong city, with wards formed based on the respective communes.
- Son Tay city was converted into Son Tay town.
